Sitting Pretty Pet Care Service
Torrance, CA
Owner, Ashley Gallagher
Ashley
and I have been friends since I first moved to California back in 1993
and I met her through her work with the March of Dimes.
Ashley
has always had a deep love for all animals. An accomplished
horsewoman, she grew up having many types of animals, cast and dogs
included.
Her
special fondness for dogs led her to create the most well respected pet
care service in the South Bay. She is not only known for her
exceptional care of animals, but also for her efforts in rescuing those
who are abused, negelcted, or abandoned.
The
responisibility of rehoming this animals falls soley on her shoulders
and is quite exhausting- physically, mentally, and financially.
Currently, one of her wards, Duke, has been going back & forth to the vet as he is susceptible to contracting aspiration pneumonia.
I
know my dogs love me, but the feeling I get from Duke takes my breath
away. No one has ever loved at me the way they do – they would take a
bullet and keep going. Despite their menacing appearance, they are
sweet, loyal, and kind and play with the other dogs. Mr. Grump is the
rule enforcer and only allows so much horse play in the house before he
rats everyone out.
Even
now with Duke in pain and bleeding from his swollen anal gland; his
looks at me so sad and allows me to do what I have to do to keep him
clean and on the mend.
Duke is
a Dogue de Bordeaux or French Mastiff, "dogue" meaning Mastiff in
French. The breed is fairly new to AKC and was on the brink of
extinction until one appeared as the drooling, messy "Hooch" in the
1989 Tom Hanks’ film, Turner and Hooch.
One
of the oldest breeds, dating back to 1203 and 1453, when England rules
over France. They are most likely a crossbreed with the English
Mastiff. The breed took hold in the 14th century as a war dog during
the French Revolution and served in both world wars. The broad head and
wrinkles were there to help pool blood away from the eyes during
battle. They have the biggest head among all dog races and it is shape
of a stop sign.
Duke's trachea and/or the epiglottis were damaged when he had been de-barked (by a previous owner). The
epiglottis is a piece of flesh that protects the trachea from food or
fluid passing into the lungs. With aspiration pneumonia, contents of
the esophagus can leak into the trachea, behind the epiglottis,
resulting in aspiration pneumonia.
Dr. Steve said she (Ashley) can no longer wait to win the lottery to pay for the laser surgery Duke needs to help with his breathing.
